Formula & How It Works

🚗 Car Mode

Fuel needed = Distance ÷ Fuel Efficiency
Fuel Cost = Fuel needed × Fuel Price

Extra Costs = Toll + Food Cost + Hotel Cost
               + Visa Cost + Other

Daily Food = Breakfast + Lunch + Dinner + Snacks
Food Cost = Daily Food × Persons × Days
Hotel Cost = Room Rate × Rooms × Nights
Visa Cost = Visa Fee × Persons

Total Trip Cost = Fuel Cost + Extra Costs

🚌 Ticket Mode (Bus / Train / Plane / Ship)

Base Cost = Ticket Price × Passengers

Extra Costs = Toll + Food Cost + Hotel Cost
               + Visa Cost + Other

Daily Food = Breakfast + Lunch + Dinner + Snacks
Food Cost = Daily Food × Persons × Days
Hotel Cost = Room Rate × Rooms × Nights
Visa Cost = Visa Fee × Persons

Total Trip Cost = Base Cost + Extra Costs
Cost Per Person = Total ÷ Passengers

Smart Travel Planning Tips

  • 1

Use Real BD Fuel Prices — Check Before Your Trip

For car trips in Bangladesh, use BDT 110–125/L for petrol and BDT 89–100/L for diesel as a starting estimate. Octane is BDT 127/L. Always check the current BPC pump price before entering your figure.

Fuel Cost = (Distance ÷ Efficiency) × Current Pump Price
  • 2

Add 10–15% Buffer for Dhaka Traffic

Stop-and-go city driving cuts fuel efficiency significantly compared to highway figures. Add a 10–15% overhead to your fuel cost estimate for any route that passes through Dhaka or other major cities.

Adjusted Fuel Cost = Calculated Fuel Cost × 1.10–1.15
  • 3

Compare Car vs Bus for Group Travel

For 3–4 passengers, splitting car fuel is often cheaper per person than individual bus tickets. Run the calculator twice — once in Car mode, once in Bus mode — and check the per-person figure.

Cost Per Person = Total Trip Cost ÷ Number of Passengers
  • 4

Book Intercity Tickets Early for Eid & Holidays

Bus and train fares are fixed in Bangladesh, but seats sell out days ahead during Eid-ul-Fitr, Eid-ul-Adha, and public holidays. Book at least 3–5 days in advance on long-distance routes.

Total = Ticket Price × Passengers + Food + Hotel
  • 5

Compare Sleeper Train vs Bus + Hotel for Overnight Routes

For overnight routes like Dhaka–Chittagong or Dhaka–Sylhet, an AC sleeper berth (BDT 900–1,800) is often comparable in total cost to a bus ticket plus a hotel night. Use the hotel field to compare both scenarios.

Train Total = AC Berth × Passengers
    Bus Total = Ticket × Passengers + Hotel/Night
  • 6

Check Visa & Entry Fees Well Ahead for International Trips

Visa fees, airport departure taxes, and port entry charges can significantly increase international travel costs. Some visas require advance applications that take weeks — research early and enter the fee in the Visa / Entry Fee field.

International Total = Ticket + Visa Fee + Airport Tax + Hotel + Food

Frequently Asked Questions

How is car trip cost calculated?

Car Fuel Cost = (Distance ÷ Fuel Efficiency) × Fuel Price. The formula works for both metric (km, km/L) and imperial (miles, mpg) — just ensure all inputs use the same unit system. Extra expenses (toll, food, hotel) are added on top to give the full trip total.

How are ticket-based modes (bus, train, plane, ship) calculated?

Base cost = Ticket Price × Number of Passengers. Final total = Base cost + any optional extras (toll, food, hotel, visa). Each extra is shown as a separate line in the result. All extras are optional — leave any field at 0 if it does not apply.

What is a realistic fuel efficiency figure for Bangladesh?

Common figures: CNG auto-rickshaw 20–25 km/m³, motorcycle 30–45 km/L, small car (Suzuki Alto, Toyota Axio) 14–18 km/L, microbus (Toyota Hiace) 8–12 km/L. For CNG vehicles enter the CNG price per cubic metre as fuel price. Current BPC pump prices (2025): petrol BDT 110–115/L, octane BDT 127/L, diesel BDT 89–100/L.

Which currencies and unit systems are supported?

Currencies: BDT, USD, EUR, GBP, AUD, INR, and SGD. Unit systems: Metric (km, km/L) and Imperial (miles, mpg). Switch at any time — the calculator does not convert values between systems, so enter all figures in whichever system you choose.

Does this calculator work for international trips?

Yes. Switch currency to USD, EUR, or GBP, enter your flight ticket price, and add visa fees and hotel costs in the extras fields. For multi-leg trips, run each leg separately and add the totals manually.

Can I calculate cost per person for group travel?

Yes. For ticket-based modes, enter the full passenger count and the per-person cost appears automatically below the total. For car mode, divide the displayed total by your number of passengers to get the per-person share.

Is this calculator free to use?

Yes. The Trip Cost Calculator is completely free, requires no signup, and all calculations run locally in your browser — no data is sent to any server.
