The Mid-Parental Height represents the center of a range called the target height. Most children will grow to be within 3 inches (7.6 cm) taller or shorter than this value. Growth curves help pediatricians see if a child deviates significantly from this target range.
To help children reach their projected height, ensure they receive a balanced diet rich in vitamins (especially Vitamin D) and minerals (calcium and zinc). Regular weight-bearing exercise and outdoor activity stimulates growth plates. Adequate sleep is vital, as the pituitary gland releases growth hormones primarily during deep slow-wave sleep.

The Mid-Parental Height formula (also known as the Tanner Method) estimates a child's final adult height based on their parents' heights. For boys, the formula is: (Father's Height + Mother's Height + 5 inches or 13 cm) / 2. For girls, it is: (Father's Height + Mother's Height - 5 inches or 13 cm) / 2. Most children reach an adult height within 3 inches (7.6 cm) of this value.
The Toddler Multiplier method projects final height based on the child's height at a young age. Historically, doubling a boy's height at age 2 or a girl's height at age 18 months provides a close approximation. For other ages, standard growth curves are mapped using age-specific multipliers (such as 1.62 for a 4-year-old boy).
While genetics account for 60% to 80% of final adult height, environmental factors play a major role. These include nutrition (adequate protein, calcium, and vitamins), overall health, physical activity, sleep (growth hormone is primary secreted during deep sleep), and chronic medical conditions.
This calculator is optimized for children between the ages of 2 and 10. For teenagers, bone age X-rays of the hand and wrist (the Bailey-Pinneau method) are required for an accurate prediction because puberty growth spurts vary significantly.
