Weighted Grade Calculator

Calculate your current weighted grade or estimate the score required on your final exam to hit your target class grade.

Step By Step

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Select 'Weighted Grade' to calculate your current class average, or 'Final Exam Target' to find out what you need on the final.
  2. In Weighted Grade mode: Add your assignment categories (e.g. Quizzes, Homework, Midterm). Toggle between percentage and points modes.
  3. Enter the weight of each category. Weights do not have to sum to 100%; the tool will scale your current standing automatically.
  4. In Final Exam Target mode: Input your current overall class grade, the weight of the final exam, and your desired target grade.

Worked Example

Example: Current Grade 85%, Final Exam Weight 20%, Target Grade 90%

Use this sample to sanity-check your inputs and understand what the final result represents.

  • 1Course weight without final: 100% − 20% = 80% (0.80)
  • 2Points accumulated so far: 85% × 0.80 = 68.0%
  • 3Points needed from final: 90% (target) − 68.0% = 22.0% overall
  • 4Required final exam score: 22.0% ÷ 0.20 (final weight) = 110%

Final Result

You need 110% on your final exam. You will need extra credit to reach your 90% target.

Methodology

Weighted Average & Target Grade Formulas

This section explains the calculation logic, assumptions, and source material used to make the result more trustworthy and easier to verify.

Current Weighted Grade = Sum(Score_i × Weight_i) ÷ Sum(Weight_i). Target Final Exam Score = (Target − Current × (1 − Final_Weight)) ÷ Final_Weight. If grades are entered as points: Category Score = (Earned ÷ Possible) × 100. Weights and grades are expressed as percentages or decimals.

Helpful tips

  • 1Weights do not have to sum to 100%. The calculator will compute your current standing based on the assignments you have entered.
  • 2If you need more than 100% on a final exam, you will need extra credit to reach your target grade.
  • 3Toggle to Points mode if your syllabus is based on points (e.g. 50/50 points) instead of percentages.
  • 4Keep track of assignment deadlines and use the Study Time Calculator to plan your preparation.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does a weighted grade calculator work?+

A weighted grade calculator calculates your overall average by multiplying each assignment or exam grade by its assigned weight percentage, summing those results, and dividing by the total weight completed. This is the standard method used in colleges and universities where a final exam or midterm counts for a larger share of your grade than daily homework.

What is the formula to calculate what grade I need on my final exam?+

To find the required grade on a final exam: Final Score Needed = (Target Grade - (Current Grade * (1 - Final Weight))) / Final Weight. All values (grades and weights) are expressed as decimals (e.g., 90% target = 0.90, 20% final exam weight = 0.20).

What happens if my grades are based on points instead of weights?+

If your class uses a total points system, you sum all points earned and divide by the total possible points in the course. Our calculator provides a 'Points' toggle mode so you can input points earned and points possible directly for each assignment, converting them to percentages automatically.

How is my grade calculated if the weights do not add up to 100% yet?+

If your class category weights add up to less than 100% (for example, you've input 80% worth of completed homework and exams so far), the calculator calculates your current standing relative to the completed portion (scaling it to 100%). It also details what average grade you must maintain on the remaining 20% of work to reach your target.
