What is the Bangladesh Universal Pension Scheme?

The Universal Pension Scheme (সর্বজনীন পেনশন স্কিম) is a government-backed retirement planning program introduced by Bangladesh in 2023. It aims to provide social security and financial independence to citizens aged 18 to 50 in their old age, offering monthly pensions from age 60 for the rest of their lives.

What are the 4 schemes in the Universal Pension?

1. Pragoti: For private company employees. 2. Probash: For expatriate Bangladeshis living abroad. 3. Surokkho: For self-employed citizens (farmers, freelancers, etc.). 4. Samata: For low-income citizens below the poverty line (where the government pays 50% of the monthly ৳1,000 contribution).

What is the minimum and maximum age of enrollment?

Any Bangladeshi citizen aged between 18 and 50 years can enroll. Individuals over 50 can also join under special terms, but they must contribute for a minimum of 10 years to become eligible for pension payouts.

No. As per the official Universal Pension Scheme rules, the pension payouts received after age 60 are completely tax-free under Bangladesh tax laws, and contributions are eligible for tax rebates.

What happens if a subscriber dies before receiving the pension?

If a subscriber dies during the contribution period, all accumulated deposits along with interest will be returned to their nominee. If the subscriber dies after age 60 but before reaching age 75, their nominee will continue to receive the monthly pension for the remaining period (up to age 75).
